Imagine … you are over at a friend’s house and in enters Jesus followed by a distraught woman with a tremendous need. She pleads for his attention. Finally, Jesus turns and responds to her request, “Let the children be satisfied first,” he says, “for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” As you listen, intrigue and confusion come over you. You begin to wonder, “What does Jesus mean? Why does he speak this way?” This is a glimpse of the conversation between Jesus and the Gentile woman found in the Gospel of Mark, and it’s our topic today.
